I have actually seen written (and heard spoken), "For all intensive purposes" or, "To all intensive purposes." For those who are not familiar with it, the idiom is "For all intents and purposes." Please.
And while I'm on the subject, the word is 'supposedly', not 'supposably'.

xenophile Dress Code
Generally, I appear to the public as a slob. This, however, is just a clever disguise. I am actually a fashion superhero of legendary exploit. This entitles me to hold the following opinions:
1 - Style is what you do. Fashion is what everybody else does.
2 - Style is a weapon. Leave it in the scabbard until you need it. Never return it unbloodied.
We now return to our irregularly scheduled programming.

More Fear
There are people who want you to be afraid. They need you to be afraid. They may or may not actually be afraid themselves. They need an Enemy. The old Enemy is defanged (or is it?), and you couldn't really come to blows with the old Enemy anyway because of that annoying mutually-assured destruction thing. The new 'Islamic Threat' makes for a good Enemy because you can actually kill some of them. On TV. And they look and worship 'different'. They can't make their own ICBMs yet, and preventing them from doing so makes a great excuse to kill some more of them. And there are some truly vile and dangerous elements among them that you can point to and say, "Look! They want us all dead! They have infiltrated our communities and lay waiting to strike without warning!". September 11th became a legitimizing act that made the 'Islamic Threat' real and enabled the popularization of an Enemy. But their Enemy is just a collection of enemies who must be dealt with as individuals or small groups. There are real Enemies both inside and outside of America, but most of them can't be defeated with the lazy, simpleminded methods of war and authoritarianism.

Progress Made in Fusion Plasma Containment
New Scientist Tech - Breaking News - Nuclear fusion plasma problem tackled
Although I'm sure there's much more to be done before it becomes practical, I'm hopeful that fusion can be used to generate electricity in the next ten or twenty years. We need something serious to replace declining fossil fuels, and fusion is about as good as it gets. Fission is nasty. Wind, hydro, geothermal and solar don't can't generate a fraction the vast amount of energy we use. They're also not as attractive when you remember to factor in pollution and energy expenditure of manufacturing of these 'green' energy systems (e.g., photovoltaic cells are made with semiconductor fabrication techniques using toxic chemicals, and most of these systems use lead-acid batteries for storage).
Of course, even if we assume a perfect, non-polluting energy source, efforts to conserve energy cannot end. The actual energy produced (in its ultimate form, heat) is a form of pollution, and a dangerous one! I forget which science fiction author (Niven? Brin?) mentioned that if we had an infinite energy supply, we'd destroy the earth in a matter of decades. The heat added to the system would cause global warming on a scale that makes the current warming look like a joke. An infinite energy supply requires an infinite heat sink!

Sensenbrenner Equates Employers of Illegals to Slaveholders
Talking Points Memo - Yglesias 11:44 PM
Are employers who hire illegal aliens the 'New Slave Masters'?
The issue here is purely one of worker treatment. Hiring illegal workers is obviously not the same as slavery. The defining aspect of slavery is that humans are legally treated as property.
That's not to say that illegal workers today can't face working conditions that are as bad as those faced by some slaves. They can find themselves in economic situations that impose a sort of effective slavery or indentured servitude. This is the real issue.
Legal workers can be mistreated and illegal workers can be mistreated. Sensenbrenner should be concerned about working conditions, but the immigration status of the worker is wholly irrelevant to this issue.

Queries
So if the NSA insists that a massive database of all phone calls is vital to national security, let's agree for the sake of argument. There would be many ways to examine this data. One would be 'datamining'. Using known or estimated parameters, datamining queries would attempt to detect anomalies or patterns that would indicate threats. The initial stages of datamining searches might not target specific individuals or organizations, so they could conceivably conduct these searches without a warrant. If a search of this databse targets a specific entity, then legal authority should be obtained. This seems to be exactly the same as subpoenaing an ISP for internet access records. Other queries could fall in between those types, or serve another purpose altogether. 'DBA Judges' might be needed to determine the legality of database usages.

Bush Says U.S. Spying Is Not Widespread - New York Times:
Only Democrats are outraged. Yeah, that's the ticket! Obviously some strange new definition of 'widespread' of which I was previously unaware.
"President Bush today denied that the government is 'mining or trolling through the personal lives of innocent Americans,' as Democrats expressed outrage over a news report describing a National Security Agency program that has collected vast amounts of telephone records."

CNN's WOLF BLITZER: ...[some wisdom] from Jack Cafferty in New York.CNN's JACK CAFFERTY: I don't know about wisdom but you'll get a bit of outrage. We better hope nothing happens to Arlen Specter, the Republican head of the Judiciary Committee, because he might be all that's standing between us and a full blown dictatorship in this country. He's vowed to question these phone company executives about volunteering to provide the government with my telephone records and yours, and tens of millions of other Americans.Shortly after 9-11, AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth began providing the super secret NSA with information on phone calls of millions of our citizens, all part of the war on terror, President Bush says. Why don't you go find Osama Bin Laden and seal the country's borders and start inspecting the containers that come into our ports? The President rushed out this morning in the wake of this front page story in USA Today and he declared the government's doing nothing wrong and all of this is just fine.Is it? Is it legal? Then why did the Justice Department suddenly drop its investigation of the warrantless spying on citizens? Because the NSA said Justice Department lawyers didn't have the necessary security clearance to do the investigation.Read that sentence again.A secret government agency has told our Justice Department that it's not allowed to investigate it. And the Justice Department just says okay and drops the whole thing. We're in some serious trouble here boys and girls. Here's the question.'Does it concern you that your phone company may be providing your phone records to the government without your knowledge or permission?'If it doesn't it sure as hell ought to."
Why Does This Make Me Nervous?
Salon.com | News Wires:
"'Inflationary expectations seem to be rising in the U.S. and you could argue some of those expectations are coming from rising commodity prices,' said Robert Rennie, chief currency strategist for Australia's Westpac bank.
Gold continues to garner support from concerns over the implications of a showdown between Iran and the U.S. over Tehran's nuclear ambitions.
At the same time, speculation that China and other Asian countries may be turning to gold as a way to reduce their foreign reserve holdings -- mostly denominated in dollars -- on a weakening U.S. dollar is also spurring investor sentiment, participants said.
'With all the rumors still about of China and the Iran issue still playing on people's minds, the dollar's not really driving gold at the moment,' said Darren Heathcote, trading head at Rothschild Australia."

A Song for Richard Cohen
What are we gonna do now?
Taking off his turban, they said, is this man a Jew?
'Cause they're working for the clampdown
They put up a poster saying we earn more than you!
When we're working for the clampdown
We will teach our twisted speech
To the young believers
We will train our blue-eyed men
To be young believers
The judge said five to ten-but I say double that again
I'm not working for the clampdown
No man born with a living soul
Can be working for the clampdown
Kick over the wall, cause governments to fall
How can you refuse it?
Let fury have the hour, anger can be power
D'you know that you can use it?
The voices in your head are calling
Stop wasting your time, there's nothing coming
Only a fool would think someone could save you
The men at the factory are old and cunning
You don't owe nothing, so boy get runnin'
It's the best years of your life they want to steal
You grow up and you calm down
You're working for the clampdown
You start wearing the blue and brown
You're working for the clampdown
So you got someone to boss around
It makes you feel big now
You drift until you brutalize
You made your first kill now
In these days of evil presidentes
Working for the clampdown
But lately one or two has fully paid their due
For working for the clampdown
But ha! Gitalong! Gitalong!
And I've given away no secrets
Who's barmy now?
Clampdown

The Ballad of Dusty Foggo
(to the tune of 'Davy Crockett')
Career man in Procurement at the CIA,
mainly undistinguished, but he seemed OK.
Working with logistics Frankfurt, Germany,
then Porter Goss came in and made him number three!
Dusty, Dusty Foggo, his promotion did seem queer!
With lobbyists and Congressmen he was adept,
resulting from the company that he kept.
He was a an inside guy at the CIA,
he made introductions so they could pay-to-play.
Dusty, Dusty Foggo, a real schmoozer was he!
As Executive Director at the at the CIA,
he ran their operations from day to day.
But he had a side job, as we will all soon see,
he channeled defense work to bogus companies!
Dusty, Dusty Foggo, covered up insufficiently!
There was a Congressman named Duke Cunningham,
who's currently serving time in the slam.
He was bribed by Mitchell Wade, and through other shady acts,
won for MZM some CIA contracts.
Dusty, Dusty Foggo, he looks involved to me!
When poker parties happened at the Watergate,
the hookers would be there, and Dusty never was late.
But sex adds the spice that give gives it tabloid zing,
And America will learn about the whole darned thing!
Dusty, Dusty Foggo, no more obscurity!
Now, this song is intended as a parody,
all criminal actions performed allegedly.
Although it don't look good for our old friend, Dusty,
We'll consider him innocent until proven guilty!
Dusty, Dusty Foggo, could get off scot free!

When Alternative Medicine Meets Xenu
Janeanne Garofalo, comedian and radio host, has recently been criticized for her vocal support of Scientology's New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Project. This Project seeks to 'detoxify' World Trade Center rescue workers who were exposed to high levels of toxic dust during their efforts.
The NYRWDP describes their detoxification program as follows:
My personal opinion is that Hubbard's detoxification methods are complete nonsense with no medical validity whatsoever. Additionally, I feel that the NYRWDP is engaged in a cynical and disgusting use of the September 11th tragedy to boost the legitimacy and visibility of Scientology generally, and their detox business specifically. They are offering false hope to the heroic victims who were injured through their selfless rescue efforts. But that's just my opinion.
This PDF purportedly summarizes the scientific support for their detoxification methods. It has many references, many to legitimate research, but the applicability of that research to Hubbard's work is tenuous. It includes this rather irrelevant passage which may be thrown in to justify the 'sweating it out' principal of detoxification:
The summary does inform us that, "This program was designed to mobilize and enhance the elimination of fat-stored xenobiotics." So we have a specific claim that the purpose of Hubbard's detox routines is to reduce foreign chemicals in fatty tissues.
How does it do this? L. Ron Hubbard's detoxification regimen was detailed in his book, "Clear Body Clear Mind," and stresses the following:
Here is a thorough critique of Hubbard'sprincipals principles that's worth reading. It focuses on Narconon, a profitable offshoot of Scientology that runs anti-drug programs, many in prisons, and attempts to boost Scientology's profile, profits and head count.
Narconon and NYRWDP are explicit in crediting L. Ron Hubbard's work as the source of their methodology. Reading the article linked above will give you some idea of how ill-qualified Hubbard was at dealing with matters of science and medicine.
Unsurprisingly, Hubbard downplayed the science and focused on the spiritual. He emphasized the supposed spiritual causes of the intoxification rather than the physical effects of the toxins, usually in the context of drug addiction. Of course, according to Hubbard, Scientology is uniquely positioned to deal with those spiritual deficiencies. Therefore, it pays to be extremely careful to avoid being indoctrinated in the religion of Scientology while receiving treatment from NYRWDP, Narconon or any other Scientology-affiliated program. Scientology has become extremely adept at indoctrination. Any claims that these programs are not recruitment stations for Scientology should be met with extreme skepticism. Let the NYRWDP answer the following question: "Are FDNY personnel being audited with e-meters?"
The New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Program situation is not good. According to this New York Times article, New York firefighters are being urged to discontinue their regular prescribed medication:
The Times article also describes a previous situation involving firefighters being exposed to PCBs which implies that this is a standard Scientology ploy:
So the pattern is: Form a subsidiary insulated from the Church, use Hubbard's ideas as a basis for some pseudo-scientific hypothesis and persuade some branch of government to use then endorse it, as a way of gaining legitimacy. They do it with Narconon, they do it with Hubbard Study Technology (my wife witnessed their sales pitch to the New York City Housing Authority and smelled a rat immediately) and they're doing it again with the NYRWDP.
The ploy works. Hubbard's ideas gain legitimacy with the public. The popularity of alternative medicine is fertile ground for abusive and dishonest operators. Here is a rather credulous article which makes a case for Scientology's methods: Oregon Daily Emerald - University of Oregon news and sports - Scientology detoxification decree has merits
The author dives right in with an exposition of the natural/non-natural chemical fallacy:
Then there's this memorable non-sequitur:
And this:
So, Janeanne Garafalo, you are a great comic and a strong progressive advocate. We need you on our side, so please rejoin the Reality-Based Community and stop promoting Scientology snake-oil.
The NYRWDP describes their detoxification program as follows:
Only one method for reducing body levels of toxic chemicals has been widely implemented, studied and demonstrated to be safe and effective: the detoxification program developed by L. Ron Hubbard.
It is a precise regimen that includes exercise, sauna bathing, and vitamin, mineral and oil supplements. More than 20 years of clinical experience have established its value in treating chemical exposures.
A continuously evolving body of research projects has examined its application in the aftermath of exposure incidents. Scientists in the U.S., Europe and Russia have collaborated on this work.
Their findings have been published by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, among many others.
Ramazzini, in his 1713 work, Diseases of Workers, notes that writers of works on poisons at that time “advise, in general, remedies that have the power of setting the spirits and blood mass in motion and of provoking sweat” (12), a recommendation which aligns well with current knowledge of the kinetics and metabolism of foreign compounds.Aligns well, eh?
The summary does inform us that, "This program was designed to mobilize and enhance the elimination of fat-stored xenobiotics." So we have a specific claim that the purpose of Hubbard's detox routines is to reduce foreign chemicals in fatty tissues.
How does it do this? L. Ron Hubbard's detoxification regimen was detailed in his book, "Clear Body Clear Mind," and stresses the following:
- Daily doses of immediate-release niacin
- Moderate aerobic exercise
- Intermittent sauna to force sweating
- Ingestion of cold-pressed oils
- Vitamin and mineral supplementation
Here is a thorough critique of Hubbard's
Narconon and NYRWDP are explicit in crediting L. Ron Hubbard's work as the source of their methodology. Reading the article linked above will give you some idea of how ill-qualified Hubbard was at dealing with matters of science and medicine.

Let the NYRWDP answer the following question: "Are FDNY personnel being audited with e-meters?"
The New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Program situation is not good. According to this New York Times article, New York firefighters are being urged to discontinue their regular prescribed medication:
"But the existence of the clinic has upset city Fire Department officials, who, among other concerns, are alarmed that the medical treatment prescribed by its doctors is being discarded by some firefighters who enroll at Downtown Medical. They say the clinic's detoxification program requires firefighters to stop using inhalers meant to help with their breathing and any medications they may be taking, like antidepressants or blood pressure pills."The worst abuses of invalid alternative treatments involve their substitution for necessary standard treatments. Why would 'detoxifying the blood' obviate the need for an inhaler? Even if the treatment was not bogus and managed to remove some toxin from the body, wouldn't the symptoms that the inhaler was prescribed for continue for some period? This makes the NYRWDP a dangerous con-job rather than just a disgusting publicity grab.
The Times article also describes a previous situation involving firefighters being exposed to PCBs which implies that this is a standard Scientology ploy:
After repeated complaints of headaches, dizziness and rashes, the city of Shreveport contracted with a private outfit that advocated Mr. Hubbard's detoxification methods. But after the city's insurance carriers questioned the legitimacy of the treatments and their escalating cost, the city hired an independent medical doctor to investigate the regimen.
In a blistering 1988 report, Dr. Ronald E. Gots, a toxicology expert from Bethesda, Md., called the regimen "quackery," and noted that "no recognized body of toxicologists, no department of occupational medicine, nor any governmental agencies endorse or recommend such treatment." The report ended Shreveport's dealings with the program.
In an interview yesterday, Dr. Gots said of the program, "It's an unproven, scientifically bereft notion."

Here is a rather credulous article which makes a case for Scientology's methods: Oregon Daily Emerald - University of Oregon news and sports - Scientology detoxification decree has merits
The author dives right in with an exposition of the natural/non-natural chemical fallacy:
One main facet of Scientology is the belief that non-natural chemicals, such as prescription drugs or environmental toxins, deplete the body of its natural disease-fighting mechanisms and lead to an abundance of health problems.
Then there's this memorable non-sequitur:
Non-natural toxins certainly do serve to reduce mental awareness, just ask the U.S. drug czar why methamphetamine is illegal.
And this:
The Scientologist belief is that if left to its own devices, the human body can efficiently take care of itself.Yes, it takes care of itself. Until you lose a leg, develop cancer or have a massive coronary. That's why primitive peoples had such incredibly long lifespans and high-quality lifestyles. :)
So, Janeanne Garafalo, you are a great comic and a strong progressive advocate. We need you on our side, so please rejoin the Reality-Based Community and stop promoting Scientology snake-oil.

Apple Defeats France?
Macworld UK - French copyright bill changes may favour Apple:
This is not a clear-cut issue. On one hand, it's always better to have open or accessible standards to aid interoperability and maximize innovation. Pragmatically, however, control over distribution is probably a key demand of the music industry. They don't want any (perceived) leaks in the security model that would facilitate piracy. We probably wouldn't have downloadable music (for 99 cents a song!) without this control. We definitely would not have downloadable music without strong DRM. It's just an ugly fact of life and business. Additionally, Apple probably considers exclusive use of FairPlay vital to maintaining their very slim margin on iTunes Music Store sales.
"French lawmakers may dump plans to require online music stores to use interoperable DRM (digital rights management) systems to protect their songs when a new copyright bill comes up for debate Thursday.
A committee of the French Senate has recommended the controversial bill is amended to remove a requirement that makers and users of DRM systems provide technical details to their competitors to enable the development of interoperable systems."

How We Win
America's day in court - Los Angeles Times
The struggle that began for America on September 11th, 2001 is still being fought. It may be, in part, a battle against Islamic extremism, but it's mainly a fight against ourselves which will be won or lost through America's actions alone.
We wouldn't have won by executing Moussaoui. We can't win by exacting revenge on the hijackers, they're dead. We can and should kill Osama and his cronies and render organizations such as Al Qaida toothless, but this alone will not bring us victory. Our victory will flow from how we eliminate these threats, not the elimination itself. We cannot, and should not aim to exact our revenge on the whole of Islam. Islam is here to stay; we must accommodate it. Brute force will not gain us victory; we have to suppress our baser natures. People evolved to use their well-developed brains to survive. Don't abandon that heritage.

Lawless
Bush challenges hundreds of laws - The Boston Globe:
via Glenn Greenwald
"Far more than any predecessor, Bush has been aggressive about declaring his right to ignore vast swaths of laws -- many of which he says infringe on power he believes the Constitution assigns to him alone as the head of the executive branch or the commander in chief of the military. Many legal scholars say they believe that Bush's theory about his own powers goes too far and that he is seizing for himself some of the law-making role of Congress and the Constitution-interpreting role of the courts."

Byrd Brain
Byrd spews the same, tired 'War on Prayer' crap that we hear from Robertson, Falwell and their ilk. The hate-filled masses need a new public target for their hatred now that racism is (ostensibly) shunned by mainstream society, and who is going to defend the non-religious?
from The Wall of Separation (the blog of Americans United for Separation of Church and State) :
I bet he'd be really fucking surprised at how big that 'few in number who don't believe' is.
from The Wall of Separation (the blog of Americans United for Separation of Church and State) :
"“In America,” Byrd said, “prayer is increasingly estranged – estranged – from public life. Some are hesitant to pray for fear they might offend someone else. How ridiculous -- to think that prayer, just to think that prayer can be offensive. Offensive to whom?”
Byrd also prattled on about how religious the Founding Fathers were and how appalled they would be at today’s federal court rulings on religion in the public square, especially the public schools. Pushing a Religious Right canard, he proclaimed that the U.S. Supreme Court has offered “ruling after ruling” contrary to the intent of the Founding Fathers and that have moved ever closer to eviscerating the First Amendment’s free exercise clause.
Those actions by the high court, Byrd said, “chills – chills, chills – my soul. Americans don’t want religious censorship. No. Ours is a religious nation. It may not seem so, but it is. We are a religious people. We may not seem so at times, not all of us. But we embrace religion as a people.
“The rights of those who do not believe, and they are few in number” Byrd stammered on, “who do not believe, the rights of those who do not believe in a supreme being have been zealously guarded to the denigration -- and I repeat, denigration – of the rights of those people who do so believe.”"
I bet he'd be really fucking surprised at how big that 'few in number who don't believe' is.
